It was a Christmas gift for my son. He researches everything and had requested this backpack. Definitely met his expectation and he was happy with it.
Well-designed and HUGE May 23, 2010 Brent Buford (Austin, TX USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you're looking for a roll-top bag that won't cost you a car payment and you're willing to give up a little bit of hipster credibility (and really, how many roll-top owners are actual bike messengers, anyway?), then this might the bag for you. Did I mention that it's huge?
This is a well-constructed, well-designed bag that functions well in both compressed, small-pack situations and when filled to absolute capacity with massive amounts of stuff. I'm always looking for that "one" pack/bag that can do everything, and I've been through about a dozen different ones. This one comes the closest to handling everything you can throw at it without being too bulky when not filled up.
I bike to local pools with my daughter and this pack can handle two huge beach towels, pool toys, drinks and snacks, but can also be rolled up and compressed for simple commutes with just a laptop and bike tools inside. If you're looking for a ton of organization and sections for all your stuff, this probably isn't the kind of bag you want, although the front pocket has plenty of small pockets and slots for phone, pens, tools, etc. But, the point of a roll-top is to offer massive, expandable storage when you need it, and on that front this bag excels. The Hemlock is pretty much a perfect compromise between the business-only messenger-style designs out there and more computer-centric packs, and unless you just have to rock a Chrome bag with your fixie (you know who you are), this may be the bike backpack to beat right now.
Great bike bag June 21, 2010 B. Gates (Oregon) I can't really think of any reason to NOT give this bag 5 stars.
Like other reviewers, I had concerns about the lack of a sternum strap. But when the bag showed up I was pleasantly surprised to see that I didn't miss it at all. The straps are thick and have a nice curve built in that keeps them on your shoulder while riding. The bag is also big and seems to be very well made. I could probably toss it in the road and let it get run over a couple of times, and I doubt it would be much more than just a little dusty. It may not be the cheapest bag out there, but IMHO it was well worth what I paid. I recommend highly.
It has room for that? August 23, 2010 A/V Man (MA, USA) Um yes it does!!! this thing is awesome. It will fit a ton of stuff inside and is really well built. I like the big center compartment and the extra wide straps. I do wish the whole front pocket zipped up (-1 star). It does have a zipper pocket inside but would have preferred if the whole pocket zipped as well. Otherwise I love this backpack.
